Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm

At least 6,500 men in the UK die each year from the main artery in their body bursting. This is known as a ruptured Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA).

There are usually no warning symptoms and only a small minority survive. Yet there is a simple, safe and totally painless test to detect an AAA.  This uses ultrasound waves to produce a picture of the aorta. The NHS does not yet offer this test as a routine, but New Medical carries out these scans in GP surgeries all over the country at a cost to the patient of £95.

If an AAA is found, it can be repaired at operation by a vascular surgeon. This procedure carries some risk, but if you are reasonbly fit it is less than that of the aneurysm rupturing — see Whether to Have a Scan . Treatment for an AAA is available on the NHS, even if you have paid for the initial test.

We are offering the scan to all men over 55. Women may have the scan too, but the condition is far less common in women. The scan takes about 10 minutes and you will be given a copy of your result immediately.

Call 0845 345 3022 to book a scan. It could save your life.
