Risk Factors

Consider booking a DEXA scan by phoning 0845 345 3022 if you fall into one of the following groups, which conform to the guidelines of the National Osteoporosis Foundation:

1. Woman over the age of 65

2. Woman under the age of 65 who has gone through the menopause and who has any of the following conditions which make osteoporosis more likely:

  • Family history of osteoporosis (especially a hip fracture in your mother)
  • Personal history of fracture as a result of a minor impact or fall after age 45
  • Current cigarette smoker
  • Low body weight (less than 9 stone)
  • Prolonged or frequent use of oral steroid tablets
  • Menopause (“the change”) before the age of 45
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Chronic diarrhoea in conditions such as Crohn’s disease
  • Chronic hormonal diseases such as an overactive thyroid
  • Chronic liver disease
  • Long term drug treatment for epilepsy
  • More than 6 months without having a period before the menopause
  • Excess alcohol intake
  • Little or no exercise over many years
  • A diet poor in dairy products or other calcium-containing foods
  • Unexplained height loss and hunching of the back

3. Men get osteoporosis and fractures too, but much less commonly than women. They are also more likely to have a specific reason for it, such as the prolonged use of oral steroids or hormonal treatment for prostate cancer. We do not contact men specifically, but New Medical will perform DEXA scans on request on men over 65 who have specific risk factors for osteoporosis.
